Stress doesn't ask permission. It arrives during busy seasons, in the middle of the night, on the commute, or all at once. Here are 20 Bible verses for stress — verses that meet you where you are and point somewhere solid.
Anchor verses for right now
Matthew 11:28
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Not "figure it out and come back." Come as you are — weary, burdened, behind. The rest is a gift, not a reward.
Psalm 55:22
"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken."
Sustain doesn't mean eliminate. The season may continue. But you won't be swept away in it.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."
Four "but not"s. Stress is real — Paul doesn't deny it. But each pressure has a limit. Not crushed. Not destroyed. That line matters.

Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
The practice: prayer + petition + thanksgiving. The outcome: peace that guards. Stress shrinks when you have something to do with it.
What specific burden can you name and hand to God right now?
Isaiah 40:31
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
Notice the progression: soar, run, walk. Sometimes the miracle is just making it through the day. Walking and not fainting counts.
What would "renewed strength" look like for you today — not soaring, just not fainting?
John 16:33
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Jesus doesn't promise stress-free life. He promises that He has already won. The stress is real; so is His victory over it.
What would it mean to "take heart" in the specific trouble you're in right now?
Psalm 61:2
"From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
The prayer isn't for the overwhelm to end. It's to be led somewhere stable while it continues. That's an honest prayer for a stressed person.
Can you pray this exact prayer right now — not asking God to fix it, but to lead you to solid ground?
Romans 8:28
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
"All things" includes the stressful things — the deadline, the relationship, the diagnosis, the financial pressure. Not all things are good. But God works through all of them.
Is there a stressful season from your past where you can now see God's hand at work?
Psalm 46:10
"He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God.'"
Stress keeps you moving, planning, worrying. This is an instruction to stop. Not forever — for a moment. Just to know who God is.
Can you sit in stillness for two minutes right now? What happens?
1 Kings 19:5-6
"All at once an angel touched him and said, 'Get up and eat.' He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water."
Elijah was burned out, suicidal under a tree, and God's first response was: sleep and eat. Sometimes the most spiritual thing is the most basic thing.
Are you trying to find spiritual solutions to physical depletion? What basic care do you need?
Lamentations 3:22-23
"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning."
Not consumed. In the middle of the hardest season this text was written in — the fall of Jerusalem — the author holds onto this. New every morning is an invitation to stop carrying yesterday.
What from yesterday are you still carrying that belongs to yesterday?
Psalm 23:2-3
"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."
"Makes me lie down" — sometimes rest is something God does to us, not something we achieve. Soul refreshment is His work, not yours to manufacture.
Where in your life is God trying to give you rest that you're resisting?
Matthew 6:34
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Jesus acknowledges each day has trouble. He's not promising easy days. He's calling you back to today — which already has enough, without adding tomorrow's problems.
What tomorrow are you carrying in today? Can you set it down until tomorrow?
Isaiah 26:3
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
Stress is often a war for the mind. The steadfast mind isn't blank — it's anchored. Choose where to anchor and return there when stress pulls.
Where does your mind go when stress peaks? What would it mean to redirect it here?
Joshua 1:9
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
God says this to Joshua as he faces a daunting responsibility. Courage is called up in the context of an impossible task — not after the task feels manageable.
Where is your impossible task? How does "I will be with you" change how you approach it today?
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Stress often signals that we're leaning hard on our own understanding and it's not holding. The invitation is to lean on something that will.
What are you trying to understand or figure out that you can release to God?
Romans 15:13
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
Joy and peace are given, not achieved. The filling is God's work. You position yourself through trust. He does the overflowing.
What would it look like to overflow with hope in the middle of what you're facing?
Hebrews 4:16
"Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
Your time of need is exactly when to come. Not when you've calmed down, not when you've figured it out — now, in the need.
What do you need most right now? Can you ask God for it with confidence?
Psalm 34:18
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Close to the brokenhearted — not distant, not waiting for you to recover. Closest in the hardest moments. That's where He is right now.
Does stress make God feel nearer or farther? What would it mean if the answer is: nearer?
2 Thessalonians 3:16
"Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way."
"At all times and in every way" is a sweeping promise. Not just in calm seasons. Not just in prayer. In every circumstance. Peace is available in the middle of the stress, not after it.
What would it look like for you to receive this peace right now, in the current circumstance?
Psalm 9:9
"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble."
A stronghold is not an escape from the battle — it's a fortified place within it. God doesn't always remove the trouble; He becomes your solid point inside it.
Where is your stronghold today? Are you retreating to it or trying to fight the battle alone?
Isaiah 43:2
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you."
Through — not around. The water is real. The river is real. But you won't be swept away, and you won't cross alone.
What river are you in the middle of right now?
James 1:2-4
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."
This is one of the hardest verses in Scripture to sit with when stressed. James isn't saying trials feel good — he's saying what they produce. Perseverance is only available inside the trial, not around it.
What is this season producing in you that couldn't be produced any other way?
A prayer for stress
Prayer
Lord, I'm carrying more than I can hold right now. The list is too long, the hours are too short, and the weight of all of it is making it hard to breathe.
You said to cast my cares on you. So here they are. I'm naming them to you now — the deadlines, the relationship, the money, the decision I don't know how to make. I'm handing them over.
Give me rest — not after this is over, but inside it. Let me know that you are working even when I can't see it. Renew my strength. Help me take the next step, just the next one, trusting you with the steps after that.
Be close today. I need you close. Amen.
Journaling prompt
Write out everything you're carrying right now — all of it, without editing. Then, beside each item, write one of the following: "I can do something about this today," "I can't do anything about this today," or "I need to give this to God." See what you learn.
